A Coconut Grove

In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is called Kalpavriksha, the wish-fulfilling tree, because almost nothing about it goes to waste. Its water and flesh nourish, its husk becomes rope and mats, its shell turns into bowls and fuel, its trunk serves as timber, and its leaves are woven into thatch and baskets. Even its sap has a place; it is drawn into jaggery and vinegar. At Vamsha Dhara, this is not a plantation kept for its harvest profit. It stands as a working reminder of what the land can give back, season after season, from a single tree that farmers have relied on for generations.

Nourished by the Cauvery

The Cauvery has shaped this entire region, and Mandya owes much of its fertility to the river running past it. Water reaches Vamsha Dhara through channels fed directly from the Cauvery, the same source that has fed the farms and plantations around us for years. There is no dependence on rainfall here and no gaps in supply through changing seasons. The channels run steadily, carrying water to the soil the way they always have, without needing the monsoon to fill in the difference. It is one of the reasons this land has stayed as productive as it has, season after season.
